A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of checking off a bucket list of mine: to see the UNESCO Carnival de Binche on Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras)! You may remember that we'd visited before 2 years ago on the Sunday before, and it was a sight to behold. Here's a look back if you're curious.
But the real show is reserved for Tuesday, when ALL the Giles dress up in the one traditional costume. In the morning they wear the wax masks and carry sticks to ward of spirits; in the afternoon they wear giant plumed hats and throw organges into the crowd. It all ends with a fireworks show! We were able to just attend the morning parade, and I'm so glad we did! If you're ever around Belgium during Mardi Gras, you must stop by.
But in case you never make it in person, allow me to introduce you to this colorful, magical tradition. I hope you can feel the excitement and color and thrill that we felt this chilly morning! (ps.. for an even better time, make sure and park in the makeshift champagne bar and have a bottle with your friends :)
